I’m thrilled to be embarking on a monthlong exploration of Zentangle patterns. Inktober challenges pen & ink artists every year to 31 days of art prompts. Zentangle art, while being pen & ink art, falls outside of Inktober’s challenges because Zentangle art abstract and non-representational. Inktober’s prompts generally aren’t. Seven Forests Five Rivers created a solution – 31 days of Zentangle pattern prompts!
The Challenge: Zentangle Inktober Tangles by 7F5R
7F5R (Seven Forests Five Rivers) host a Zentangle version of Inktober every year called Inktober Tangles. Check out their Facebook group to find more information and to see the amazing art created by Zentangle teachers and artists from around the world. Each day, we are given a Zentangle pattern and are asked to create something with it. Some artists create beautiful frameworks to blend the various tangles together into one piece of art. I wish I was that organized! I create a card for each day – it gives me the freedom to change up mediums I use, but it also means I don’t have to prep anything ahead of time!
Zentangle Inktober Tangles introduces me to new patterns, By the time the challenge is over, I will most likely have several new favorite patterns! This month’s challenges will also push me outside of my comfort zone. I will need to try patterns I might otherwise pass over. At least a few of these challenges will ask me to think outside my own bag of tricks to finish my daily piece. All of this kickstarts my creativity and gives me fodder for future pieces and classes. I can’t wait!
