Zentangle Inktober Tangles Day 5 – MOLYGON

Zentangle Inktober Tangles Day 5 brings me to a really cool pattern, MOLYGON.

Zentangle Inktober Tangles Day 5 Molygon

Like RAIN from Day 1, MOLYGON was created by Zentangle. Created with nested boomerang or crescent shapes, MOLYGON makes a wonderfully dynamic tangle. It stands well on its own, but it really shines as a reticula (framework) for pattern fragments and embellishments. You can draw MOLYGON as a swirly blob in like in the example here or you can build a segmented line with it. So many options!

Today’s Tangle

Zentangle Inktober Tangles Day 5 Molygon

I was excited to be sitting in my studio when I started this tangle. The past several days, my designs started on the go so I didn’t have all my fun tools on hand. I actually love working purely in black-and-white, but sometimes you just need some color. I have a stack of cards on my work table in various states of completion which included this card. A leftover from a class that I ran awhile back, this card was all dressed up with no place to go! The watercolor technique is called map-tangling. Stay tuned as I am putting the finishing touches on several watercolor classes that utilize this technique!

When I use the map-tangle technique, I like to tangle with patterns that aren’t too open, but also not too filled in either. Having lines that are close together, but not closed off or filled in emphasize the little gaps left by the uneven application of watercolor. MOLYGON is entirely too open, but with some embellishment, it’s perfect! I chose simple lines to make a fan shape and then added a little TIPPLE to complete the card. I used graphite and white chalk pencils to deepen the highlights and lowlights. I’m incredibly happy with today’s result – my favorite card so far!
