Dojo Dust-up
“Dojo Dust-up” joins the Nonsense Album along with Lulu and the Trumpets, Slow Tides, 50cc of Joy, and Robot’s Night Out. Like many of my songs, it started as something else entirely. When last I looked at it, I was experimenting with a “sports hip-hop” idea that came from a sync brief. I didn’t end up completing the song in time for the brief partly because I just didn’t like where it was going. I never delete projects, though. Hard drive space is cheap, so I have a “Song Graveyard” on my file server. You never know when something might be useful!
Call me a hoarder, but this mentality has jumpstarted several songs recently. I actually liked a bunch of things about the song I started, but other pieces just weren’t falling cleanly into place. Taking a step back and listening to it with fresh ears helped me realize where I needed to go with it. I kept most of the instrumentation of the first draft (and added some more) and reworked melodies and harmonies so they fit together better — many ideas carried over with small tweaks. The original version used some voice samples, but I didn’t love them. I moved towards a couple of “nonsense” samples (and messed them up even more). I then created a rhythmic element with Native Instrument’s Vocal Colors – a super fun instrument!
Have fun at the Dojo!

Check out my other arrangements and compositions. My library grows every month and now has a variety of styles. Besides world fusion instrumentals, it features electronic music, pop, and a few arrangements of old hymns and carols.
