50cc of Joy (Ask Your Doctor)

I recently entered a song-writing contest. No I didn’t win, but that’s not why I entered it. I mean. It would have been nice to win, for sure, but I wanted to force myself outside my comfort zone. Splice (a company that sells samples, loops, plugins, etc to music producers) has a very active Discord server where they sometimes hold contests for its users. With only a handful of songs under my belt, I threw my hat in the ring with other music producers! So I didn’t win, but I discovered a wonderful, supportive community of musicians and producers and I got a lot of good feedback.

So why the name? The contest sponsor provided a bunch of samples and we had to write a song using one or more of them. I chose the “Ask Your Doctor” sample because it made me laugh. It’s a riff on the music you hear in the background of a lot of prescription drug ads. While I kept the sample looping through the entire piece, you can hear it very clearly in the intro, the bridge, and during the outtro. I chose to weave other melodic elements with it and 50cc of Joy was the result!
