Koko Kaper

Koko Kaper, a song by Christina L. White

Koko Kaper

My newest release, Koko Kaper, arose from my song graveyard. Most composers I know maintain a “graveyard” for their work – a place for ideas that don’t end up going anywhere or songs that never found a home, etc. We don’t want to outright delete things because you just never know! Since disk space is cheap, it’s easy to be a bit of packrat with your files.

A couple of months ago, I was pulling together a five song set of world fusion instrumentals…. except I didn’t have five songs written. I had two that were finished and one more in the works. A perfect time to go digging through the graveyard! When I first started learning how to use LogicPro, I would create little beats while experimenting with plug-ins and sound design. One of these experiments was a simple drum line with a vocal sample that I had chopped up and messed around with. I remember thinking this could turn into something cool, but I just wasn’t in a place to take it further.

Months later, when I revisited it, I heard the foundation for my story about mischievous Koko and his adventure. I expanded on my original drum line and rechopped my vocal sample. When I wrote this, I was going through a bit of a flute phase – it joins Summit Whispers, Rain Dance, and a couple of others yet-to-be released songs (stay tuned) that feature at least one kind of flute. Koko Kaper makes me smile when I listen to it. I hope it does the same for you.
