Draw With Me: Zentangle Halloween Edition
Back when I held a regularly scheduled Zentangle drawing club for kids, I tried to find patterns that fit the season. The Zentangle Halloween edition of my Draw With Me Series features a favorite. Some of patterns required embellishments to fit into a seasonal theme, but this pattern – “Draq” by Simona Cordara – works perfectly as-is. While I like Cordara’s original design, I found the step-out to be a little too challenging for kids. I simplified how the body segments are created and stuck to one of the ideas Cordara gives in her design. Check out the original, though. Once you get the hang of the pattern, some of her alternatives are super cool to play with!
I created this video for families to try together, but this isn’t strictly for kids. This pattern works great for kids, but it has enough going on that adult tanglers won’t be bored. This video features a full voice over (no music) as I walk you through the pattern, shading, and adding color. Even if you’re interested in using your colored pencils to finish the piece — and I totally don’t blame you! – check out the black and white shading to learn a little more about creating highlights and lowlights. You may find some of that material useful as you start to color in those bodies and wings! I hope you enjoy my Zentangle Halloween design as much I enjoyed putting this video together for you!
Check out my other Draw With Me videos. I’m slowly growing my library, so be sure to subscribe either to my YouTube channel or my newsletter to know when I drop a new video. If there’s a technique, pattern, or theme that you’d like to see me do, drop me a message!
