Layered Tangles: A Zentangle® Technique Class for Adults
Looking for a different way to tangle together Zentangle patterns? Learn how to use gridded patterns as an “overlay” for other patterns in my Layered Tangles Zentangle Technique Class. Explore layering the pattern on top of itself or over other patterns in order to create beautiful meta-patterns and designs with depth.

Layered Tangles Class – What to Expect
We will begin our time together by learning/reviewing the two gridded patterns that we will use to create our overlay: PANGEA and MOLYGON. We will then set up two designs: MOLYGON will be used to overlay other Zentangle patterns such as PRINTEMPS, HOLLIBAUGH, or TIPPLE. Students are welcome to follow my design or be creative and incorporate a favorite pattern or two of their own. We will then set up a second design that uses PANGEA as an overlay for itself, creating a unique monotangle.
This class is intended for tanglers who are familiar with The Zentangle Method® and the basic concepts. There are many great resources out there – starting with Zentangle HQ – to learn the basics. I also offer two versions of an introductory class: Introduction to Zentangle® and Intro Zentangle & Watercolor.

Class Supplies
You’ll need:
- Paper choice (use what you’re most comfortable with):
- Several sheets of White Mixed Media or watercolor paper (minimum 98lb / 160g) – cut down to a 4″ square is ideal. (Bigger than this may end up being too big for the time alotted).
- Several white 3.5″ Zentangle art cards (or similar brand).
- Regardless of what you decide to use for your art pieces, have a piece of Mixed Media paper on hand to try out pattern ideas.
- Black Micron 01, 02, or PN pen. Alternative: Any fine-tipped art pen such as a Staedtler fine-liner or Sharpie Ultra Fine Point
- Medium soft Sketch Pencil (HB, 2B, 4B work best)
- Tortillon or blending stump
- Two Grey Gel pens (1 light and 1 medium color)
- I recommend 2 pens from the Gelly Roll Moonlight grey-scale pack
- If you don’t have gel pens, you could use two sketch pencils for a similar effect. I recommend an HB (or 2H) and 4B (or softer).
- Optional: Black Micron 08 (or another thick tip art pen for filling in spaces)

Classroom Information & Policies
Zoom links will be emailed to you before class. The class will be recorded and you’ll have access to that recording for 7 days after the class. Also, at the conclusion, you will be provided with reference materials for the patterns we created.
In our time together, I will create a judgement-free zone. There are no mistakes in Zentangle! That means that each participant can go at their own pace and ability. I will encourage everyone to experiment and see what works for them.
Studio class cancellation policies can be found here.
